Joan Sergay is a Brooklyn-based director. Recent projects include the world premiere of Not Not Jane’s by Mara Nelson-Greenberg at Clubbed Thumb and Lena Dunham’s memoir Famesick for Penguin Random House Audio.

Joan has directed and developed new work with MCC, Manhattan Theatre Club, New York Theatre Workshop, Lucille Lortel Theatre, Ars Nova, Ensemble Studio Theatre, No Guarantees, The TEAM, Colt Coeur, Geffen Playhouse, Actors Theatre of Louisville, and Juilliard.

On Broadway, Joan has served as Associate Director to Robert Icke (Oedipus), Sam Mendes (The Hills of California by Jez Butterworth), and Rachel Chavkin (Lempicka). Off-Broadway, she was Associate Director to Ian Rickson on Sexual Misconduct of the Middle Classes, starring Hugh Jackman, at TOGETHER/Audible’s Minetta Lane, and has also worked as associate or assistant director to Danya Taymor, Les Waters, and Lee Sunday Evans.

As an audiobook director, Joan has directed over 200 titles, primarily for Penguin Random House, as well as for HarperCollins. Recent projects include Lena Dunham’s Famesick, Bob Odenkirk’s memoir Comedy Comedy Comedy Drama, and No Ordinary Love, Hinge’s first-ever audiobook, created in partnership with Dazed Studio.

Joan is a New Georges Affiliated Artist and a former Resident Artist at the cell theatre, Audrey Resident at New Georges, New York Theatre Workshop Adelphi Resident, and Directing Fellow at Clubbed Thumb, Playwrights Horizons, Manhattan Theatre Club, and Actors Theatre of Louisville. She holds a BA in Theatre and Creative Writing from Northwestern University.
